There is a famous legend of camellia from Yeosu Odongdo.  A young fisherman and his wife lived on the island of Odong on a house on the edge of a cliff.  One day, a strange man snuck into the couple’s house and tried to hurt the wife while alone at home.  The fisherman’s wife runs out of the house in panic and is so shocked and scared that she runs over the cliff and dies.  On his return home the husband was devastated and heartbroken when he discovered his wife’s lifeless body.  He buries his wife and leaves the island for years only to return due to keeping longing to be close again to his long gone wife.  When he went to see his wife’s burial ground, he discovers a tree growing on the grave with red flower and it seemed his wife was saying to him, ‘I waited for you to come back’ and ’I love only you’.  Camellia flower’s romantic meaning originated from this legend.  Camellia also has many other meanings such as purity, beauty and faithfulness.
