SHEET MASK 101: Do's & Don't's

1. LONGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER

If using a skin care product for 30 minutes is good for you, then 60 minutes must be double as good, right?  Wrrooong! Unfortunately this is not the case for sheet masks. Sheet masks act as a concentrated source of hydrating and anti-aging ingredients.  Remember that only one side of the sheet mask is in contact with your face.  The other half is exposed to dry, moisture sucking, air.  If the sheet mask gets too dry it can actually start pulling precious moisture away from your skin.  To avoid this from happening sheet masks should be used for a maximum of 20 minutes.  As a matter of fact, the sheet masks are actually designed to have an optimal effect when used between 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the humidity in the room.  One of our most important JO:AH tips is to never fall asleep with a mask on, or you might just wake up with paper-dry skin, YIKES!

2. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS & APPLY THE SHEET MASK PROPERLY(TO GET THE MOST OUT OF SHEET MASKS)

We recommend squeezing out any leftover serum in the packet (why waste a good thing?) and apply to your face and neck generously before putting on the mask.  Do not store the leftover serum for later, we recommend to use right away.

3. TOP QUALITY INGREDIENTS IS KEY

What makes sheet masks so effective? These masks essentially ‘pump’ your skin with an intense amount of active ingredients in a short amount of time. The ‘sheet’ creates a barrier for your skin, so that these ingredients can be delivered effectively without risk of evaporation.  Look for options that are paraben, mineral oil, and synthetic dye and fragrance free to minimize irritation and exposure to harmful toxins.  And also, the masks themselves can often times be bleached which is best to avoid if at all possible.

4. NOT ALL SHEET MASKS ARE THE SAME

Due to the innovation explosion in this field all sorts of materials ranging anywhere from paper, fabric, cotton, hydro-gel, and bio-cellulose to sheets made of 100% natural ingredients (like sea kelp aka seaweed). With the more accessibly priced sheets, it’s important to check that it’s of a high-quality natural fabric such as cotton (preferably 100% for breathability) and that it isn’t bleached.  If a sheet mask is constantly falling or sliding off (which equates to a less effective transfer of ingredients), it’s going to be that much harder to include it in your daily routine. Find one that you love and use 1-2x a week to keep your skin looking its best!

5. WHAT COMES BEFORE AND AFTER A SHEET MASK IS JUST AS IMPORTANT!

Think of sheet masks as your at-home facial, and just as your professional treatment provider would. Before applying your mask, you need to start with a cleansed and toned canvas, ready to receive a big serving of goodness.  Sheet masks are infused with serums that are designed to penetrate the skin efficiently. Once you remove the sheet mask, remember to gently pat the remaining serum into your skin to aid absorption. And a quick tip – if there’s any extra serum inside of your sheet mask packet, apply this to your face, neck, and back of hands before you apply the sheet mask for maximum efficiency.
